ECHOLALIA

An evolving exhibition in which sound, text, voice, and painting form a continuum, since 2024

Echolalia began at the Maison de Heidelberg in Montpellier as a two-person exhibition with Jasmine Justice. While Justice presented a series of paintings, I composed radio-paintings in response to both her works and my own. The exhibition began with a question: what happens when a painting is listened to rather than looked at?

Since then, Echolalia has developed without a definitive form. It brings together radio-paintings, paintings, spoken and written texts, recorded conversations, and the resonances that pass between them. Radio-paintings are autonomous sound works; Echolalia is the evolving exhibition that places them in relation. Each exhibition, broadcast, or listening situation produces a provisional version of the work.

Some versions, particularly the episodes broadcast on CiTR, grow from conversations recorded for Grammaires fantômes. Rather than being replayed or summarised, voices, silences, rhythms, and memories become material for composition. Written, composed, and performed in my voice, some radio-paintings speak from the imagined perspective of a painting; others carry conversations, encounters, or artworks into another form.

In Echolalia, there is no single passage from one form to another. A painting may give rise to a sound work; a conversation may continue through a poem, a voice, an improvisation, or a radio-painting; existing works may be brought into new relationships. Each presentation provisionally brings these different continuations together. Radio is one of the spaces in which the exhibition is composed, but not its only one.

ECHOLALIA
