bio

The transposition of the aural to the visual represents the key order principle of Lichtig’s works. By successive transformations, found sounds – collected words of conversations, stories kept secret, forgotten events, birds singing, the wind ... –  become drawing, photography, painting, digital print, text. These different states coexist in assemblages where variations of light or optical phenomena – photoluminescent ink, maginfying glass, long exposure photography, moiré patterns –  invite the spectator to constantly refocus, to adjust his or her point of view.

How through successive shiftings hollow language? How this void creates language in turn?  By successive transformations, found words – of conversations and stories kept secret, forgotten events or invisible phenomena –  become sound, musical notations, photography, objects, painting, digital print, text again, etc. These different states coexist in assemblages where variations of sound, light or optical phenomena – photoluminescent ink, maginfying glass, long exposure photography, moiré patterns –  invite the spectator to constantly refocus, to adjust his or her point of view.

Nadia Lichtig is currently living and working in Montpellier, South of France. Lichtig studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris with Jean-Luc Vilmouth, where she graduated with honors in 2001, before assisting Mike Kelley in Los Angeles the same year. She taught at the Shrishti School of Art and Technology, Bangalore, India as a visiting professor in 2006, at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Valence in 2007, and is professor at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-arts (Esbama) / Academy of the Arts Montpellier, France since 2009, where she directs the seminary  Art & Invisibility. Inspired by artists and intellectuals who have presented alternatives to mainstream culture, such as outsider art, pop music and feminist figures, she has collaborated with musicians who are also visual artists, such as Bertrand Georges (Audible), Christian Bouyjou (Popopfalse), Nicolu (La Chatte), Nina Canal (Ut) and Michael Moorley (The dead C). Until 2009 Nadia Lichtig worked under several group names and pseudonyms such as EchoparK, Falseparklocation, Skrietch, Ghosttrap and Nanana.
